More capability, more refinement, and a much better V6 are all welcome upgrades to what was already a solid platform selling well despite some stiff competition. From a ride standpoint, the Tacoma was truckish but not overly stiff, and the long wheelbase of the Double Cab, even in TRD Offroad trim, was compliant on-road and off.Īs far as incremental improvements go, it's hard to argue with what the 2016 Tacoma brings to the table. The rack-and-pinion steering was, for a truck, nicely weighted and very accurate, if a little numb. With an aggressive stab of the throttle, all of our testers hiked up their fender flares and moved with an appropriate amount of authority, but none could be described as quick. Our testers came in any flavor you wanted, as long as it was a V6 with an auto, but we got to sample Access and Double Cab models (and didn't notice anything to differentiate them from behind the wheel). On the road, it's well-mannered as a truck this size can be, and on par with its arch-competitors, the Colorado and the Canyon. Other than that, it's standard Tacoma when the trail gets dusty. The penalty for choosing the 3.5 is about 80 lbs of weight. It makes the 3.5 slightly more efficient than the 2.7 in most configurations-and makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft to the 2.7's 159 hp and 180 lb-ft. Thanks to that variable intake valve timing, the 3.5 can switch between Otto and Atkinson cycles on the fly depending on load.
That's partly due to a combination of D4S direct injection and variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust valves. It's similar to the corporate V6 that is in everything bigger than a Corolla, makes decent power, and gets respectable fuel economy. The 3.5-liter six is new for this application. Offering no real advantage except cost, the 2.7 is (as per usual) an inferior choice to the six. It wasn't available to drive in the 2016 pre-production trucks we sampled, but on paper it's just as thirsty and lackluster as before. The carryover 2.7 inline four is old enough to vote. Under the hood, it's a bit of something new, something old. Toyota spins this as backwards compatibility with the current Tacoma's respectable aftermarket offerings, and that's certainly nice for owners. Likewise for the mounting points for the rear bumper… so on, and so forth. For example, the front control arms are stronger and the shocks have been revised, but a suspension lift intended for a 2015 truck will still fit a 2016. On a more granular level, a lot of this truck is carryover-the biggest points of differentiation are the added high-strength steel in the cab structure for added safety and a new V6. The end result, in both the Tacoma's case and those of its sedan stablemates, seems different enough from the previous vehicle to make it competitive, meet future safety and emissions regs, and keep it competitive with the Colorado and Canyon twins-all without needing to wipe the slate clean. New sheetmetal and improvements were added to a mostly existing car. Don't remember those refreshes? Don't blame you. If Toyota didn't have a regulatory gun to its head, it's quite possible that the 2016 trucks would look even more like the current truck.įor 2016, Toyota has given the Tacoma what amounts to a heavy refresh, along the lines of the Camry and Corolla. Why's Toyota messing with it? The real answer is, they're not messing with it much. So it definitely ain't broke, as the saying goes.
Still, Toyota claims that the 2015 Tacomas are up 20 percent, thanks to cheap gas and cross-shopping with the new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins.
